Ramblings (3/3/25-3/9/25)

It’s been a minute. I didn’t see anything new or write something for the last week of February mainly because I was on call. For this past week (3/3/25-3/9/25) I saw two movies for the first time, David Lynch’s Eraserhead (1977) and Bong Joon-ho’s Mickey 17 (2025), but here I am writing on a late monday night that’ll probably be picked up on Tuesday. Truth be told, I have not been feeling really motivated as of late. My California Respiratory Therapy license is set to expire by the end of next month and I have just barely started to do my 30 hours of “continuing education”. As I’m writing, I’m letting a course play in the background at the same time and will likely stop writing for tonight when the course finishes. When it comes down to the blog, I keep telling myself I shouldn’t force myself to watch something to write about it. I get in my own head that I don’t have anything new or insightful to add, especially to older movies that I am just now seeing for the first time. So I don’t watch something, then I have nothing to write about, then I again tell myself I shouldn’t force myself to watch something, then I don’t watch something. In the case of Eraserhead, I just felt drawn to watch it for whatever reason. I purchased the blu-ray last year at the Spectrum Mall Barnes & Noble in Irvine, California and with David Lynch’s recent passing, decided that now was the time to watch his feature debut. I decided to consider that as my new movie of the week and write about that. Seemed more convenient as I haven’t had much of a desire to get out of the house, outside of work. Nevertheless one of my friend’s invited me to see Mickey 17 as it was just barely released. When I saw the trailer for it back when I went to The Monkey (2025), I thought the theatrical release was a ways away. So that gave me just enough motivation to go see it with friends after work.

The weekend itself was nice. Two of my friends out of town asked me to come on down and dogsit their new puppy. Even though I just said I haven’t had much of a desire to leave the house, that isn’t to say I’m not willing to find an excuse to go out (if that makes sense). So I agreed to dogsit and had a good time. The little pup was predictably a little afraid of me, but she warmed up a little and it was good to hang out with friends before and afterwards.

I also took the opportunity to visit a record store recommended by the same friend that invited me to see Mickey 17. Rhino Records in Montclair, California not only sells new & used music on vinyl, but on tapes and CDs too. What stuck out to me though was that they also sold new & used books and movies. I didn’t go through a deep dive of the music selection, but I did find albums on CD and vinyl that I have been on the lookout for some time. I did heavily browse the movies section though and found that they had an eclectic selection of movies and shows on DVD, blu-ray, and 4K blu-ray. From classical to modern, from popular A-films to cult gems, you may find yourself purchasing at least one title if you’re a movie person (shit they even have the movies that would’ve been hidden behind bead curtains at an old video store). Shilling syntax aside, I really did like the store and intend to come back another time.

So I still have two movies to write about, but now that I think about it, it would probably be better to make these ramblings into its own post, separate from my thoughts on Eraserhead and Mickey 17. In fact, I’ll likely have two seperate posts on those movies just so that it’s not one long post. Well now I feel a little better and seem to have curbed this little case of writer’s block for now; it’s almost like writing is therapeutic or something. Anyhow, have a good night.
